National Voluntary Blood Donors' Day - 2011
 Blood Bank - Overview

Blood Bank is a facility to collect, store and provide blood. Blood cannot be manufactured synthetically. Blood is collected from blood donors. Blood should be accepted only from voluntary, non-remunerated, low risk, safe and healthy donors. Efforts should be directed towards encouraging and retaining adequate numbers of repeat donors. Donors should be appropriately recognised and felicitated for their contribution. A blood bank should educate donors prior to collection of blood regarding the risk of transfusion transmissible infections.

Blood transfusion is one of the modes of transmission of HIV/AIDS. Blood banks ensure that only healthy blood is collected from healthy blood donors, the equipment, instruments, consumbales are free from infection and storage is as per standards. A licensed blood bank automatically meets all the requirements. For safe blood transfusion, everybody is advised to contact only licensed blood banks. Is is believed that such gestures from public will bring down the spread of HIV/AIDS by this mode to almost zero.
