National Voluntary Blood Donors' Day - 2011
 IEC

IEC stands for I-Information, E-Education and C-Communication. The meaning of IEC is to inform and educate the people about the epidemic HIV/AIDS through proper communication. The target of IEC is to communicate to the masses both in rural and urban segments through different means of Media that has penetration among various segments of the population about the facts of HIV/AIDS, educate the community to follow the right way of living and end this evil disease from the entire society by the help of maintaining proper ways of life.

INFORMATION EDUCATION COMMUNICATION (IEC) : THE UNPUTDOWNABLE FACTS

Bihar is such one of the most low prevalence states in the nation as far as HIV/AIDS Infection is concerned but it has a vast mobile population largely male which migrates to various parts of the country in search of livelihood. These males usually leave behind their families and visit their home at least once a year. As these men stay away far from their home for extended periods the chances of their indulging in sexual relationships outside the marriage life become high, thereby, increasing their risk to contracting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS also.

Apart from the above an interlinked issue is the low level of literacy especially among the women. Coupled with these are low levels of awareness and poor health seeking behavior. Keeping these issues in the mind and resources available a lot of careful planning and upright thought have been put into preparing appropriate guidelines of IEC activities in the state.

 OBJECTIVES OF IEC

Among the several objectives of IEC component the 3 most important objectives of this component are:

  • To create awareness regarding HIV/AIDS, its modes of transmission, how it spreads and how to prevent, the services available for testing and treatment with special focus on the women and the youth.
  • To observe Voluntary Blood Donation Day, World AIDS Day and participate in local events like Sonepur Mela, Kalchakra, Pitripaksha and Rajgir Mahotsava along with Shravani Mela in the entire state.
  • The IEC activities will rely on an ideal media mix to ensure that the communication is effective but emphasis is on using inter personal methods.
